Common Causes of Heel Pain

Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is when the thick band of tissue near the soles of your feet becomes inflamed. This condition can be incredibly painful and usually causes stabbing pain around your heel.

Heel spurs

A heel spur is an abnormal area of bone growth that protrudes at the bottom of your heel bone. It’s often associated with plantar fasciitis because around 50% of people with the condition also have a heel spur.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome

The compression of your posterior tibial nerve leads to a painful condition known as tarsal tunnel syndrome. The pain is usually isolated to the inside of the ankle. Sometimes, it can extend well beyond to your heel, toes, and even calf.

Achilles tendonitis

The tendon that connects your heel to your calf muscles is susceptible to inflammation during periods of overuse. Are you constantly jumping or running? That can cause Achilles tendonitis, which impacts the heel.


Heel fractures are usually sudden and severe. They’re typically caused by extreme force. For example, a serious fall or car accident.


Several types of arthritis, like rheumatoid or Ankylosing spondylitis, impact your feet and heels. Not only could you experience pain, but also swelling and serious discomfort.

Sprains or strains

If you’re athletic or active, it’s likely that sooner or later you’ll develop a sprain or a strain. Sprains usually develop as a result of overuse when soft tissues around your joints tear or stretch beyond capacity.
